Description
Contract-based scheduling lets software components declare what they need, such as a processor budget per period, and have a framework guarantee and enforce it. It is the basis for composable, isolated real-time software on shared platforms. This workshop gives engineers the theory and hands-on practice to apply these ideas, starting from the fundamentals of real-time scheduling.
What’s included
- Foundations: task models, deadlines, utilization, rate monotonic and EDF scheduling, and the Liu and Layland bound.
- Analysis: response-time analysis step by step, including blocking, jitter and overheads.
- Resource sharing: priority inversion, priority inheritance, the priority ceiling protocol and the stack resource policy.
- Reservations: aperiodic servers, the constant bandwidth server and temporal isolation.
- Contracts: contract parameters, admission control, spare capacity distribution and quality-of-service adaptation, with historical context from the FRESCOR research project.
- Hands-on labs: analyzing task sets, configuring SCHED_DEADLINE on Linux, and observing isolation and overload behavior.
Deliverables
- Live instructor-led sessions with time for questions about your own systems.
- Slides, lab instructions and exercise solutions in PDF format.
- A certificate of attendance for each participant.
Typical timeline
The workshop runs over two full days or four half-day sessions. Sessions are scheduled with you after ordering; for team bookings, we can tailor examples and lab exercises to your application domain, such as automotive, industrial control or multimedia.
Who it’s for
Embedded and systems software engineers, architects and technical leads with programming experience in C or C++ and basic familiarity with operating system concepts. No prior scheduling theory is required. Labs use a Linux machine or virtual machine; setup instructions are provided in advance. For a preview of the material, see Contract-Based Scheduling Explained.
How it works
- Order: purchase one seat per participant on this page. You will receive an order confirmation by e-mail.
- Kick-off call: we contact you to agree on dates, delivery format and participants’ background.
- Scope confirmation: we confirm the schedule, agenda and any tailoring in a written statement of work or booking confirmation.
- Delivery: participants receive joining instructions and lab setup notes before the first session.
The final scope is confirmed in writing before the workshop. Please review our refund policy for cancellation and rescheduling terms.
